Who is OurMacGuy?

Shawn Watkins has been involved with the assembly and support of computers for nearly 20 years. Starting with an Apple IIGS, Shawn began learning elementary programming in High School and eventually went on to study Computer Programming at the University of Maryland. Shawn worked primarily in a Windows environment for the next 5 years. He assembled numerous computers for family and friends as a part-time small business. Shawn eventually became the Mid-Atlantic Field Service Representative for Hospitality Systems, a company specializing in the design and implementation of computerized menu and ordering systems for restaurants and hotels.

In 1998, the opportunity presented itself to return to Apple computers when Shawn began work as a support technician for Towson Computer. Having a background in the assembly of computers, Shawn primarily worked on the service bench, repairing computers. This allowed him to gain a strong understanding of how Macintosh computers were assembled and familiarity with numerous and varied hardware and software problems. Working daily on several computer systems with different unknown problems provided Shawn with invaluable troubleshooting techniques that help to quickly isolate and repair technical problems.

Never one to take comfort in the familiar, Shawn took on a new challenge when he moved on to work in the IT department for Goucher College. Putting his skills with the Mac OS to use, Shawn became the technician primarily responsible for all Macintosh computers on campus. He led the campus-wide rollout of OS 9 for all Macintosh systems on campus and helped to integrate the school’s Macintosh and Windows networks.

When MacHome and Office opened in Towson, MD, Shawn was offered the opportunity to return to the service department of an Apple Specialist, this time as the Service Manager. Shawn supervised the design and implementation of the service department policies and procedures and hired and trained a staff of capable technicians. UnderShawn’s watch, the service department achieved scores of 150% of Apple Computer’s strict customer service guidelines for 24 consecutive months. Shawn worked with the sales staff to provide technical consultations for small offices and large companies. He helped to design, implement, install and support many networked environments. Shawn also provided technical instruction by constructing and teaching the first OS X training classes in the Baltimore region.

After MacHome and Office closed, Shawn moved on to MacServices near Annapolis, MD where he was employed as the Service Manager and Macintosh Business Consultant. Shawn was provided the opportunity to fly to the Apple Campus in Cupertino, CA where he attended training on using OS X Server, XServe, XServe RAID, and XSan. Shawn also attended a week long, summer camp in Toronto, Canada where he received further training on OS X Server from Apple System Engineers. Shawn spent several years designing, implementing, and supporting numerous OS X Server based networks throughout Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C.

In 2006, the time arrived for Shawn to use his experience to form a new business. OurMacGuy brings a strong background in hardware repair for both desktops and portable computers. He has worked daily in the support and troubleshooting of Apple OS X since the release of the operating system over five years ago. He has experience in working with businesses of all sizes to assist them in selecting the appropriate network devices, installing those devices into existing network infrastructures, and then supporting the resulting networked system.
